Some people feel happier than usual while others feel low in mood, short-tempered and irritable. Some people feel low or flat for several days to weeks after they stop taking steroids, as it takes a while for your body to begin making its own steroids naturally again. The types of corticosteroids most often used to treat lymphoma are dexamethasone, methylprednisolone and prednisolone. A group of steroids called mineralocorticoids (including fludrocortisone and hydrocortisone) are sometimes used to treat adrenal crisis.
Risks and side effects

Stopping steroids safely
The main way to minimise the side effects of steroids is for their dose to be kept as low as possible, but there is a limit to how far this can be done and still get the necessary benefits. Unfortunately one cannot completely uncouple the good from the bad sides of steroid treatment. Untreated, the arteries in TA can become blocked, thus threatening the eyesight. TA also responds well to steroids but the starting dose is much higher (60mg) than for PMR.
You may be able to have the live shingles vaccination (Zostavax) if you’re on a low dose of steroids. Alternatively, there is a non-live shingles vaccine (Shingrix) that you may be able to have instead. The person treating you will make sure you’re on the lowest possible dose to keep your condition under control.
To stop gaining weight you will have to reduce your calorie intake and increase your physical activity (although this may be difficult due to your MS). Your doctor is likely to be keeping an eye on your blood sugar (glucose) level. If it has been a while since it was checked ask to have this looked at, just in case you are beginning to drift up into the diabetic range, which may require specific treatment.
Intravenous (IV) steroids
But your sugar levels usually go back to normal shortly after you stop taking steroids. You should have this card if you are dependant on daily steroid use. This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol. Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress.
